CBRE research has revealed that £836m was committed to deals and development in 2011, up from £770m in 2010 and £350m in 2009, highlighting a rise in the number of investors looking to buy student accommodation.

Attributing to this demand, a 2012 Knight Frank report has named student rooms as the UK’s highest performing commercial property market, prompting a rise in investors entering student room investments.

Highlighting the success of the asset class, the report revealed that investors can secure average 11.5% return which is only slightly below the 13.5% recorded in the previous year. Despite this small reported decline, the 2012 Knight Frank Student Property Report stated the returns were still much higher than other commercial asset classes.
